dpkguse hostname <hostname> to set the hostname, $EDITOR /etc/hostname to set it for the next boot, and $EDITOR /etc/hosts to set the FQDN, or create /etc/hostname if it doesn't exist, or 'man 1 hostname'
valdynqwertz: and you probably want /etc/mailname to fit too
qwertzvaldyn, thanks had used hostname to set it but wasn't permanently, thanks for the hint with mailname
GutterPunkHi, I have this issue with my package management system: whenever I try to install proftpd I get this: "Package proftpd has no available version, but exists in the database. This typically means that the package was mentioned in a dependency and never uploaded ..." I use debian woody. I also messed up the status file and removed the proftpd lines :/ Can someone provide me with those lines? :)
creatureIs there a "Debian way" to stop the computer initialising networking (ie. running /etc/init.d/networking start) on boot or should I just delete the symlink from the relevant runlevel?
sepcreature, you just comment out the auti [interface] lines in /etc/network/interfaces
creatureOK.
Also, on bootup the "cs" module takes a long time to initialise. Can I speed it up somehow?
abrotmanare you using pcmcia ?
HardDisk_WPhow can I make a full ISO image (bootable!) from a CD?
PobegaHardDisk_WP: What do you mean?
sepdd if=/dev/cdrom of=./imagefile.iso
creatureabrotman: I do have a pcmcia slot.
I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm using it, but I'd like it to be available to me.
amphiHardDisk_WP: the cd is bootable?
HardDisk_WPthx sep
sidjsterharddisk what os are yoiu using right now
HardDisk_WPamphi, win2k setup cd
sidjsterright now
HardDisk_WPsidjster, debian
amphiHardDisk_WP: yeah, just dd it
sidjsterok
abrotmancreature: though .. i hvae it too and it doesn't take long
bwlanghow bad is this: pagebuf_get: failed to lookup pages ?
sepevolution asks me for my gpg passprase on each mail i send. it used to be able to mark for "for this session" and it would not ask again until i restared evolution. how can i get back this for the session feature
creatureabrotman: It seems to hang at the end of the process.
abrotmancreature: try taking it out of the boot process and make sure that's actually the problem
creatureabrotman: See http://www.ethicsgirls.com/stuff/dmesg.txt, at the end. It'll wait around for a while after the "cs" part before going on to the Bluetooth part.
sorl_how can i add a new ethernet interface in addition to entries in interfaces
abrotmancreature: i've never seen that on my box .. but i don't have bluetooth
sorl_ifup eth1: SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
so there is something i need to do....
i wonder if i dare to do /etc/init.d/networking restart from ssh
sepsorl_, ifconfig -a
sorl_, can you not just write another entry in the interfaces file
sorl_sep, well that just lists my interfaces...
sep, i did put a new in there...
sepifconfig lists your detected interfaces.
creatureabrotman: OK. If I wanted to take it out of the boot process, how should I do that? Just delete the symlink from the relevant rc process, or is there a better way?
sepifup just configures trhe interface
