ithiumthanks
zu22dondelelcaro: ah yeah
zooted_Hello, I just tried to copy an install to LVM and I can't boot now. It seems that my initrd does not have the necessary LVM modules. How can I rebuild initrd with LVM support?
bjweekscan a deb be installed into a home dir?
Wyzardfridim: The LVM-on-encrypted-RAID5 that I mentioned earlier is where my root filesystem is located :-)
dondelelcaroBjweeks: yes, using dpkg-deb
Bjweeks: well, not really installed, but unpacked, yes.
Wyzardzooted_: stable, testing, or unstable?
fridimwhen is encryption necessary ?
dondelelcaro(you can technically install it too, but msot postinsts will fail)
zooted_Wyzard: I hate to admit it, but it is actually Ubuntu 6.10.
Wyzardfridim: It's not really *necessary* from a technical standpoint... just something I wanted to do
zooted_: Then ask in #ubuntu, not here
canine_koujidarn ubuntians
fridimbut what make me loose myself is the assistant on lvm : it creates /boot
canine_koujiu boot tu out the door :P
Wyzardfridim: yeah, /boot can't be on the array
fridimso I need a /boot somewhere
zooted_Wyzard: Thanks for the pointer, But I have found that asking in #ubuntu is a lot like asking at Radio Shack. "You've got questions, we've got blank stares."
Wyzardfridim: What I'd suggest is, on each of the two disks, create a 50MB partition at the beginning, and leave the rest for the RAID

zooted_: Ubuntu is not the same as Debian... it has differences that we don't keep track of, so it's not supported here
fridimbut it won't be easy for futur switch on disk failed, will it ?
dondelelcarozooted_: unfortunatly, we can't really help you here, because we don't know what sort of freakish things they've done to the packaging.
Wyzardfridim: Use one of the 50MB partitions for /boot, and leave the other unused
dondelelcarozooted_: if #ubuntu can't help you, try their forums; it's all listed in their topic.
zu22cafuego_: you gonna watch the Melbourne Games?
bwlangzooted_: i just answered you in #ubuntu
zooted_bwlang: thank you
fridimwhat happens when it is the /boot disk which failed ?
dondelelcarofridim: that's why you have it on two separate drives.
Wyzardfridim: In the case of RAID-1 I guess you can get away with putting /boot on the array, though it's a bad idea with other RAID modes
but with LVM that won't work, for much the same reason it won't work with RAID-0 or RAID-5
dondelelcaroyou generally make /boot a separate raid 1 partition and install grub on it.
(onto both halves)
fridimi've tried a big / on RAID 1 : grub didn't start
So what for the /boot partition ? Do we do backup ?
