| limpc | i configured it though console said eth0 up.. |
| donavan | you didn't setup dns properly then or you couldn't reach the internet |
| limpc | yeah i did.. i set it to my router for gw/dns, and entered my own dns server as secondary dns.. |
| donavan | or setup the network proper -- verify it works from ctrl-alt-f2 with a ping to google.com |
| limpc | but, its still a bug :P failure to resolve / access inet shouldnt halt the entire installation geez well ive already continued the installation without extras.. its processing packages |
| tommy | I'll have to remeber that loko to avoid the same carry on in the future with lvm |
| donavan | limpc: bugs.centos.org awaits your contribution |
| limpc | yeah so do a bazillion projects im behind on lol. |
| donavan | limpc hmm the installer has bugs. limpc it crashed when i tried to do a custom installation |
| loko | ya its very useful - and you need to remember it to remind me when I forget next time =) |
| limpc | my HD died last week and ive been frustrated trying to install an OS since.. |
| donavan | your original comments led me astray |
| limpc | installed Ubuntu - then found that the stupid thing didnt install any libs and source - i couldnt compile anything.. and it kept hanging my machine once a day for some reason went with bsd.. bsd kept crashing during install complaining about missing kernel files (on the iso cd) fedora apparently released a corrupt ISO image.. so here i am with CentOS :) if this doesnt work out im going with slackware, then finally LFS. although i could probably have an OS up and running with LFS by now lol. |
| tommy | fedora releases were quite brilliant fc1 just went like a train from the word go never a problem with it same with fc3, once installed it ran happily for years but the lifecycles just kept getting shorter |
| limpc | yeah ive installed fc4/5 on other machines without any problems fc6 cd1 iso seems to be corrupted.. i downloaded directly from fedora, then from mirrors, then from torrents.. all with the same problem on the same cd |
| tommy | isnt that the one which installed the wrong kernel |
| limpc | no idea? |
| tommy | everyone got i386 performance |
| limpc | poo. well.. im not using fedora now :P |
| tommy | was fixed with the first update of packages |
| limpc | does anyone really use the default kernels on their machine anyway? i usually grab the source for my favorite kernel version soon as im done installing, and compile it for my machine.. |
| tommy | I've just moved my main desktop from fc3 to c5 apart from niggly graphics card problems it seems ok |
| limpc | oic. ive always used some flavor of linux for one computer or other.. this one im installing it on has always been a windows machine though - due to programming work however, the harddrive died, and my 16 month old thought CD's tasted good for a while.. you can imagine what happened :) |
| z00dax | limpc: almsot everyone in here has distro kernels |
| tommy | I used to always change to a slimmed down minimailst kernel but lashings of ram and the bewildering number of kernel config options means I am tending to keep with the packaged kernels |
| z00dax | the whole point of using a stable distro is to not need to worry about things like that, this isnt gentoo lands! |
