Meiernot all of the deps are versioned. and some advanced users might want to change ld.so.conf of LD_LIBRARY_PATH for very valid reasons
recompile is not as flexible
and if you allow your users to modify system-ld.so.conf you really have other problems
if a user changes LD_LIBRARY_PATH .. his problem

john2hello, i have a DELL Workstation and i would like to use a Linux distribution.. it has monitor/keyboard/mouse etc.. so i can have a Windows interface.. if i add that (i think is Gnome or KDE) i will lose in performance? or is about the same?

phimichello all i use centos 4 and have a little problem with X11 forwaring over ssh
i get the error "could not open display", i use ssh -X

i installed centos yesterday evening, all fine -> updated the stuff
rebooted it
all fine, today i booted it up -> all fine
but i went into hibernate, after getting back out of hibernation my NIC was not functioning well anymore
