| Zathrus | BillSik: use the exclude directive in your yum.conf |
| BillSik | Zathrus, do you know what could be causing this? |
| g_harris | intel 965 based boards, 8 gigs of ram - PAE kernel both the one on the CD and the latest rpm - takes about 20 minutes to boot, drive access speed is 2-6M/s - take out 4 gigs of ram - all is perfect. I've had no luck finding a solution to this one. |
| euclid | don't use so much ram on a desktop chipset? |
| foo_bar | or use a 64Bit System. which most of the core 2 duo would support |
| g_harris | the 64 bit install just locks up and the software I use is yet beta on Cent5 and not even beta on Cent5 x86_64 |
| Cartoon | if 64-bit install just locks up I would suspect some kind of hw problem tried to add memory one (or two) moduels at a time? then do it again in different order |
| foo_bar | Cartoon: PAE is also called "P"ain in the "A"rse "E"xperience. |
| Cartoon | I know got one customer using it with 64GB memory, then complaining about performance |
| Zathrus | Pretty Awful Enhancement |
| Cartoon | 8GB is ok'ish tho |
| donavan | must be talking about intel chips again |
| Zathrus | really shouldn't matter if it's 8 GB or 64 GB -- you're incurring the penalty for every memory access. donavan: AMD has PAE as well. |
| Cartoon | Zathrus: but it is about window sizes in 4GB area |
| g_harris | so what quad core ready chipset is good to use with cent 4 or 5 that has a supported nic/sata controller? I've found in the past it's a crap shoot with via and sis chipsets whether the nic or the sata will be detected |
| Cartoon | you have to map your PAE memory within that address space |
| Zathrus | don't use via or sis chipsets... |
| g_harris | so don't use intel, via, or sis chipsets |
| Cartoon | via 686a and sis645dx were both very nice chipsets... but way off being quad core ready :) |
| action | Zathrus said nothing about not using Intel. |
| Zathrus | said nothing about not using Intel. |
| foo_bar | g_harris: hp/ibm/dell produce nice servers with quad cores |
| g_harris | wonder if centos would detect the sata and lan on those |
| Zathrus | g_harris: euclid's exact statement was "dont use so much ram on a desktop chipset". The 965 was not intended for server use. |
| foo_bar | g_harris: it does. We have two hp dl380 g5 with a quad core cpu |
| Zathrus | and I note that 8 GB is the upper limit for that chipset. I would be surprised if that was well tested. |
| g_harris | yeah pretty certain it isn't hardly tested at all considering the myriad of issues, exactly why I hate upper edge hardware for linux, give me something already in use and tested well any day but this was for a customer guess it's "spend another couple grand for dell or live with 4 gigs" |
| VSlaw | on centos what chat software can i use becouse right know i am on mirc but centos not work mirc some can help me |
| Zathrus | irssi |
| VSlaw | irssi ?? |
| orc_orc | Zathrus: actually: screen irssi |
| Cartoon | or xchat |
