| Firebot | howdy ... i am having a problem installing centos5 on a Tyan S5160 Mainboard /w Onboard Graphics (XGI Valari Z7) after selecting Language and Keybaord Selection it goes no futhur than that either in Graphical or Text mode install ... |
| sonyman | i'm wanting to compile RHEL5 from source, primarily just for the heck of it. has anyone done this? |
| Firebot | top on the spare useable terminal during the installer shows Anaconda is going nuts @ 50% CPU usage (Pentium D 2.8 Ghz) all the other terminals for the installer show ni sign of a problem, but there does seem to be allot of strange ACPI Proccessor & PCI Express error exerted from the kernel on boot s/ni/no Memtest passes fine, CD/DVD test passes fine Centos 4.3 Installer works fine ... but the only thing i can see that is does different is it detects the Onboard vido as generic, when centos 5 detects it as the Volari Z7 sonyman: i have done it with Rawhide in the much earlier days ... so im sure it is possible |
| sonyman | Firebot: what do I need to do in order to compile the srpms? I'm familiar with rpm --rebuild, but do I need to do anything special? im using centos 5 as my OS to do the compilation so I can simply rebuild all the pkgs instead of needing to install them |
| Firebot | why would you want to do that anways ? CentOS 5 is not to far from RHEL5 anyhows ... and seems to be pretty good at keeping binary complatibility in the past |
| sonyman | just for the heck of it |
| Firebot | i spose you can do it for like you said ... just for the heck =P lol yeah |
| sonyman | i'd rather have my system say redhat instead of centos |
| Firebot | lol |
| sonyman | that's my only reason |
| Firebot | well it is possible ... probably not recommended =P ... install the srpms ... |
| sonyman | does centos have a list of changed packages? |
| Firebot | then use rpmbuild -ba to build the packages |
| sonyman | can't i just rpm --rebuild foo.src.rpm? |
| Firebot | you most certainly will need to setup a build account on the system as allot of packages should be never compiled as root |
| sonyman | why? |
| errr | Id setup mock but then again I wouldnt be wasting my time doing that |
| Firebot | sonyman: yes you can ... but generally it is good to be able to do some extra backporting of your own to certain packages ... and maybe some repalcements of certain packages im sure that are in RHEL but not in the SRC's due to Licencing |
| sonyman | what does "extra backporting" entail? forgive my ignorance, i've dealt very little with this sort of thing, or even rpm-based distros in general if it's a lot of trouble, i won't worry about it |
| errr | heh |
| Firebot | lol yws backporting can be ... |
| sonyman | i'll just compile the artwork packages |
| Firebot | lol ... heheeh |
| sonyman | it used to be that you could jump on redhats site, request a trial, and download full-featured ISO's now, some guy calls u and drills you i told him my honest intentions: for personal use, prob won't buy a copy |
| Firebot | request ... you could just download them ... |
| errr | grrr I think my install is hung. Its been at "Formatting / file system..." for like 10 mins, and its only an 80G drive |
| sonyman | so he said kthxbye and told me to use fedora |
