peerceand being able to /msg them
thecoolone19peerce: regarding the tool for date event pop-up how can i make it so that someone can use it on both windows and linux ?
peercethecoolone19; write it in Java ?
or build two seperate executables
jennam+n also implies no external messages to the channel
thecoolone19well im not that good in java. last java program i wrote was 2 years ago. i work with php now
peerceMS windows GUI programs and X windows GUI programs have -way- different APIs in any conventional language.
PHP is for doing websites, not really suitable for writing desktop applications
thecoolone19c# ?
peerceC# is Microsoft only
jennamI used to know of a tool you could use that made GUI apps for windows, x, and macos from one set of source
peerceand is a lot like java, but with totally different classes.
jennamForgotten what its called now..
thecoolone19but how can i make an app that allows user to enter data without having the need to have mysql or mssql server installed
peercethere's a 3rd party implementation of VisualBasic for Linux, I think its called RealBasic or something, but it costs $$.
jennami think that was it
realbasic
maybe
thecoolone19thanks jeann will check it out
jennampeerce said it :)
as for sql, you could try CSV files or something
thecoolone19ohh thanks peerce :0
:) ;)
peerceyeah, would be OK if you only have a few 100 entries or whatever. woudl be slow to search if there's 1000s, however.
thecoolone19no there are gonna be many number of entries
peercewith a java app, you could put the data in a XML file, I suppose, and java 1.5 has an embedded light database
thecoolone19maybe even more thatn 10,000
peerceso each day of the year will come up with 100s ?
thecoolone19yes
because its a history flashback information
peercehow many words per entry typical?
thecoolone19whats CSV ?? i checked wikipedia but its ambigious
peercecomma seperated values.
thecoolone19say around 100-500 words
peercedate,year,description
thecoolone19there isint any info about that on wikipedia
peerceholy crap. if thats 250 words average, at 6 chars per average word, thats 1500 bytes/entry, with 10,000 entries, thats going to be a 15 megabyte raw text file, not counting the index info.
why not do this with a website?
put your data in postgres or mysql or whatever on your webserver, have a php application to fetch and display it however.
thecoolone19because i want this tool to be available to people without interenet as well as a stand alone app.
