raystormI have apache currently configured as SuSE defualt, however I need to run a shell script and output the results, unfortunatly the wwwrun user SuSE uses to run apache has a shell of bin/false, is there a way to run the script without changing wwwrun's default shell? I apologize if I should be asking this somewhere else, if so please let me know.
sockmonkpsusi: it's configurable in apache's conf files. Debian might have patched the default conf file to use a particular mime type list from the mime-support package
ViRUSI finally figured out why my virtual hosting config was broken for the "main domain" - well, not "why", but at least "how to fix" it. Maybe someone can enlighten me and give me a hint what was going wrong. I'm using the debian standard setup (/etc/apache2/sites-{available,enabled}) and have a 000-default in sites-enabled. This file is included first and contains the VirtualHost *. After adding a ServerName to this directive the other domains starte
d to work again. Previously ONE (and only one) vhost didn't work - which was (by accident? don't think so.) the "main domain".
jpegraystorm: how about a cgi?
psusisockmonk: so basically apache has to be configured on each system to know the mime types? there is no generic mechanism for it? is there no central list? who decides on mime types?
jpegraystorm: there's also suexec, if your build supports it.
psusiI ask because I have noticed that troff files are being assignex application/x-troff, instead of text/troff or something that would allow browsers to just view the dang text
so is it just debian's arm that I need to twist to fix this or are they just following some w3c standard or something?
raystormcan cgi call a shell script?
ViRUSI just added a "ServerName example.com" in order to make sure it is never matched but for the "catch-all" purpose for unused domains. Why does apache break the VirtualHost of my primary domain if I leave away that directive?
jpegraystorm: cgi scripts can be shell scripts.
catsuppsusi: what do you mean generic mechanism?
ViRUSeh, I maybe have a clue why this happens - what does the "ServerName" default to?
sockmonkpsusi: I think apache comes with a default file of mime types, but I can't say where it comes from or how it's determined
psusicatsup: like the standard unix "file" command, rather than relying on the admin to specifically configure apache to know internally about each mime type
sockmonkjust that you can change it easily enough
catsuppsusi: it's /etc/mime.types
probably
psusicatsup: yea... on debian systems... but what about non debian systems?
catsupanyway, you can specify a TypesFile
raystormjpeg, I've always used php, I've only seen cgi used for authentication. and those were always in perl, a language I can barely read
catsupno, it's TypesConfig
sockmonkpsusi: what about on windows systems?
ViRUSdefault is the reverse lookup of the current ip - thus by having a <VirtualHost *> section without "ServerName" section it will always catch the "primary domain".
psusisockmonk: that's one example, yea.... or just say, redhat...
sockmonkI picked windows because I suspect it doesn't have a builtin 'file' command, while redhat enterprise does
catsuppsusi: is TypesConfig not a generic mechanism?
ViRUSdoh. that explains a lot - still I feel like this is not a good default for ServerName - an empty string or invalid domain (like example.com) would be ways better and less problematic for most setups
psusisockmonk: right, but apache doesn't seem to use it?
catsup: it is not generic in the sense that it is wider than just apache
sockmonkkeeping it internal to apache's config makes apache's behaviour more consistent across platforms.
psusicatsup: and wider than the specific apache site configuration
catsuppsusi: well, ok. what you're asking for is impossible
psusimaybe I should check the default apache list then and see if it differs from debian's
cause I don't think troff should map to application/ when it is just plain text
eikelmtsockmonk : that is where i got confused ,, i need to compile in ssl and copy mod_jk to the modules folder
catsuppsusi: so change it man
ViRUSgotta go - thanks for the mental support - even though nobody but me said a word regarding my case. ;-)
