Daveman:o
smthis server has been working for years
gryzorit may need you are experiencing the slashdot effect
s/need/mean/
lampsm: 0 idle and 12 total.. what's your MaxClients setting?
gryzorjust "tail -f" your access log
smgryzor: access log shows nothing much.. a request now and then
gryzorah
smMaxClients is 20
megaspazthat's pretty low
smis it ?
lampsm: are you hitting that limit?
smI don't know
megaspazdefault maxclients is 150
lampserver-status?
fajitaserver-status is enabled by mod_status. See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_status.html or http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_status.html
megaspazit's a pretty decent default
smhuh.. this is ubuntu dapper
megaspazthen i guess ubuntu futzed with the default
sminteresting
unfortunately I never got server-status working
apache is proxying to a zope server.. if the zope server hung and tied up requests, could this explain things ?
Davemanlampy!
smfinally, things seem to be flowing again.. I no longer get "server seems busy" after apache restart
lamphey daveman
sm: that disconnects the connections so surely it helps .. atleast for few moments
smcan I ask about the other defaults ? on this ubuntu machine, startservers=5, minspareservers=5, maxspareservers=10, maxclients=20, maxrequestsperchild=0
what would you recommend for a medium-busy server running on a VPS ?
lampsm: MaxClients limits the number of concurrent connections, if 20 is not enough you might want to increase that. if it's slow/hanging backend, then deal with that. Min/MaxSpareServer just control the number of idle servers
smlamp: ok, I assume if I had more than 20 concurrent requests I'd see an apache error in the browser - that never happens, so I think this is ok
Daveman:)
smI'm really at a loss to know what happened here :(
but up and running.. thank you all
rendoWith setting up Apache2 and virutal hosts, can a wild card key such as * be used? IE /home/*/public_html? It doesn't seem to work and I was wondering if there was a way to set it up that way
gryzoryes
